Campaign Against Antisemitism is a volunteer-led charity dedicated to exposing and countering antisemitism through education and zero-tolerance enforcement of the law.
Hustings Against Antisemitism
For the first time, candidates from the major parties participated in a hustings focusing exclusively on the fight against antisemitism.
In the lead up to the General Election, the Jewish community and the public want to know what our political parties propose to do about surging antisemitism.
Since the barbaric attacks carried out by Hamas on 7th October last year, we have seen an unprecedented rise in antisemitism in Britain. On our streets, on campuses, online, in workplaces and elsewhere we are seeing regular expressions of anti-Jewish vitriol, and even violence. Jewish children are being told to hide their school blazers, synagogues and community centres are guarded, kosher shops are being attacked, business owners are being threatened, and Jewish students are intimidated on campus by intimidating messages, genocidal chanting and encampments. The effect on the Jewish community has been profound.
So what do our political parties propose to do about it?
The panellists:
Tom Tugendhat is Minister of State for Security, having previously served as the Chair of the Foreign Affairs Select Committee from 2017 to 2022, prior to that holding positions at the Foreign Office and serving as a Lieutenant Colonel in the British Army He has served as the Conservative MP for Tonbridge and Malling since 2015, and is running for the newly-created seat of Tonbridge in this general election.
Alex Norris is the Shadow Minister for Policing, having previously held Shadow Cabinet positions on Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, and Health and Social Care. Previously, he sat on the Home Affairs Select Committee, and prior to entering the House of Commons he served on the Executive Board of Nottingham City Council. He has served as the Labour MP for Nottingham North since 2017, and is running for the newly-created seat of Nottingham North and Kimberley in this general election.
Jeremy Purvis was appointed a Liberal Democrat working peer in August 2013, taking the title Lord Purvis of Tweed. He was born at the mouth of the river in Berwick-upon-Tweed and represented its source as Member of the Scottish Parliament for Tweeddale, Ettrick & Lauderdale (2003-2011). When elected he was the youngest constituency MSP and he is one of the youngest ever Life Peers. Jeremy is currently the Liberal Democrat Lords Spokesman for Foreign Affairs, International Development and International Trade.
Ben Habib is the co-deputy leader of Reform UK, and is the Party’s spokesman for Brexit and the Union. He served as a Brexit Party Member of the European Parliament for London in 2019 until the UK’s withdrawal from the EU. He is a Chief Executive of a commercial property investment and fund management company, and he is running for the seat of Wellingborough and Rushden in this general election.
The Green Party was also invited to send a senior representative but they were unable to, with apologies, citing the busyness of the campaign.
